Foreclosures and short sales is still a big business all over the country. In Florida, that's most of the real estate agent business if they want to continue real estate until the market change. It's something that has to be embraced as well as helping families in need. Thanks for sharing!

I think most people would agree that FHA loans offer competitive rates with less stringent credit terms than traditional programs. Even buyers with less than stellar credit are still able to qualify for the program.

Very sad news, Marty. We just mitigated a home in Troutville where the wife had cancer and both their German Shepards died of lung cancer. They went 10 years "talking about" testing their house! We got it down to a 1.2pCi/L from 18.9 in 2.5 hours and her prognosis is "optimistic" according to the Oncologist.
The foreclosures are still running strong all around the country. They probably will continue, especially in the speculative area of Southern California, Florida, Nevada and Arizona. Until we find a bottom, which i hope we are getting now. The equity declines are too big for many people in those markets of 60% drops to hold on.

We are so pleased to see this important public education material posted. RADON is very easy to test for and simple to mitigate. You can purchase simple, affordable & accurate home test kits at hardware stores. Lung cancer is preventable, unlike so many other cancers. Test today so you can Breathe Safe.

I wonder if the house was broken into once it was empty. Copper is stupidly expensive now. Someone could break in at 1am and in 3 hours have every piece of copper cut out. It might earn them about $100 in copper. Remember the guy (or guys) who were cooked up in the Radford area when they were trying to illegally cut copper from the electrical wiring from a house they thought had the power cut off?

Thanks for your thoughtful comments Sam and for taking the time to share them.

There are many reasons for the current housing crisis we're in, and there are unscrupulous people in the real estate industry who have contributed to these problems, but as the adage goes, if it looks to good to be true it probably is. Many buyers bought into loan programs that were not suited well for them.

For example, an adjustable mortgage with a future balloon payment is a good option for some people out there, but for a lot of home buyers this was not a good choice.

Many problems can arise that may lead to not being able to refinance when the balloon payment comes due, or simply being no longer able to afford your monthly payment as interest rates adjust upward. Illness, hospitalization, loss of job and others have wreaked havoc on folks with these types of loans leading us into this whole mess.

It is terrible to see so many folks losing their dreams to foreclosure, but the consolation is after a few years and working on getting their finances and credit back in order, they should be able to qualify for a mortgage again.

And there are also some unscrupulous builders out there. You may be interested to read this Charlottesville REALTORS® take on builders sales contracts (and also my comments).

Hi guys,

Everybody wants a piece of real estate. The sector has been growing at 25-30 per cent a year since 2003, fired primarily by low interest on housing loans and the rising affluence of home buyers. Those who had bought stocks of real estate companies, whose valuations have gone through the roof, are a happy lot. However, the same cannot necessarily be said of scores of financially and emotionally bleeding home buyers. The developers play lord and master to middle-income individuals, who often live like monks to fulfill their dream of owning a house. Most sale agreements are heavily loaded in favour of builders in the currently unregulated market.

I think it's a great thing. I'm personally not a fan of over-regulating but unfortunately sometimes the government has to step in where common sense fails.

Too many natural resources, farms and great swaths of land with and without trees are razed for cookie-cutter homes for folks who want to live in a suburban neighborhood "out in the country". It doesn't make sense to me. If you want to live in the country, then great, but leave the suburbs where they are...with trees.
