Valley View cracks down on kids

June 29, 2007 · Filed Under Roanoke Happenings

The Roanoke Times is reporting that Valley View Mall has created a new underage policy, to go into effect on July 13, prohibiting “teenagers from hanging out at the mall without adult supervision on Friday and Saturday nights.”

The policy will require anyone under the age of eighteen to be escorted by a parent or guardian on Friday and Saturday evenings after 6:00pm.  Valley View Mall advises ID will be required at mall entrances.

You can read Valley View Mall’s announcement here.  I wonder how many extra security guards and Roanoke City Police officers that’s going to take?

They have begun the same practice at the largest mall in our area as well. I can definitely see the potential risks of having unsupervised teens hanging around, but at the same time, we all did the same things as kids and we turned out fine, didn’t we :)

You’re exactly right and it’s too bad that the few spoil it for the rest of the good kids who just want a place in Roanoke to hang out.

The problem is that teens have very few places where they can safely hang out with their friends. If they’re not allowed in the mall, where are they going to go? I see why retailers aren’t keen on having them hanging around, but I don’t think a crackdown is the answer.
