Home sales in Virginia began the year on a slower pace than last, according to the January 2006 Virginia Home Sales Survey, published by the Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR).

The year began with 8,780 homes on the market, compared to 9,588 for January last year, an 8 percent decline. Homes were on the market an average of only 98 days, however, and several areas still show a short timeframe from listing to closing. Also in January, 6,716 contracts closed compared to last year’s 7,965, a 15 percent decline.
